Follow-through fails because commitments scatter across tools with no system connecting them. A Sales Engineer makes a commitment in a customer meeting. That commitment lives in a meeting note. The context that makes it actionable lives in an email thread. The dependency it creates lives in a Slack message to engineering. The deadline lives in a calendar invite. And the deal it affects lives in the CRM.

The SE isn't dropping the ball. They're managing an impossible information architecture — dozens of commitments across dozens of deals across five or more systems — using nothing but their working memory and whatever notification happened to fire most recently.
When a follow-up gets missed, it's almost never because the SE forgot the customer existed. It's because the commitment was never surfaced in a context where it could compete for attention against whatever arrived most recently in the inbox or Slack.
Why More Process Makes It Worse
The typical response to missed follow-ups is to add process: weekly pipeline reviews, CRM update requirements, activity logging mandates. Each of these adds overhead without addressing the root cause.
Pipeline reviews focus on deal stages, not commitment health. A deal can be "on track" in the CRM while three critical commitments are overdue.
CRM update requirements measure data entry compliance, not execution quality. A rep can dutifully log every activity and still miss the follow-up that matters most.
Activity mandates create busywork. Logging calls and emails into a CRM doesn't ensure the right commitments get the right attention at the right time.
The Fix Is Structural, Not Behavioral
The solution isn't better reps or better process. It's a system that detects commitments where they're made, preserves their context, scores their priority against the deal, and surfaces the right work at the right time.
When follow-through is governed by a system rather than relying on individual heroics, execution becomes consistent. Not because people changed — because the architecture changed.
